Pakistani spinners were the only players to be selected out of their pool with the Hundred 2026 auction of Usman Tariq being the highest priced player in the men auction at Piccadilly Lights. The choice is indicative of the increased fame of the spin talent in global franchise cricket.
After pacer Haris Rauf, all-rounder Shadab Khan and batter Saim Ayub had not been acquired in the previous rounds, Birmingham Phoenix auctioned Usman Tariq at PS140,000 (PKR 5.32 crore), becoming the first Pakistani to be purchased in the auction. The fact that Tariq signed is an indication of hope that he can contribute a lot in the competitive tournament.
In the meantime, Abrar Ahmed was in great demand by Sunrisers Leeds, which is an IPL-based franchise, which bought the Pakistan international spinner at PS190,000 (PKR 7.12 crore). Kavya Maran, the owner of the franchise, defeated Trent Rockets in the bidding of Abrar to make a significant investment of the Indian-owned team in the Pakistani talent. The decision highlights the appeal of talented players across borders to franchise teams such as The Hundred.
The players yet to be sold at the main rounds such as Rauf, Shadab and Saim were kept in the pool to be selected during the final round. Franchises were allowed to select one out of this remaining pool with the first bidder getting the player unless they are surpassed by another team. The format maintains the competitiveness and provides players with the opportunity to enter the league again.
The auction is an indication of both the talent within the Pakistan cricket and the tactical plans of franchises as they strive to acquire important players so as to uphold their teams.
