Board of Healthcare Funders conference 2025 tackles NHI

The city of Cape Town is hosting over 400 delegates attending the 2025 annual Board of Healthcare Funders conference. A priority on the agenda has been the National Health Insurance Bill (NHI) that was signed into law in 2024.

According to the chairperson of BHF, Neo Khauoe, the purpose of the conference is to equip private medical aid providers with skills. Thus far attendees have been taught how to align global strategies with local action like NHI. The five day gathering kicked off on Saturday, 10 May 2025 and will wrap up on Wednesday, 14 May 2025.

“The NHI Act, in its current form, has sparked passionate debate and deep uncertainty across the healthcare sector”, said Khauoe.

“While we stand in strong alignment with the principle of universal health coverage, we must also engage with the real-world implications of how this vision is implemented”, she continued.

NHI Act promises gain for private medical care providers

The registrar of the Health Professionals Council of South Africa, Dr Magome Masike, said there is an upside to NHI for private healthcare providers. During his presentation at the BHF conference, he said private doctors stood to gain financially.

“The NHI will contract some GPs to supplement its public primary care services. It will contract for certain high priority services to address specific gaps in public sector provision. An example is oncology and renal dialysis”, said Masike.

“The vast majority of NHI services will continue to be delivered by public sector clinics and hospitals”, Masike continued.

Masike said regulators and practitioners should embrace the NHI. He believes the pair should continue to possess traits of credibility and honesty. He emphasised that regulators should focus on solving the problems for which they have been established to solve.

Healthcare bodies take Ramaphosa to court

On 7th May 2025, the North Gauteng High court gave private medical aid providers a life line. The court ordered president Cyril Ramaphosa to provide the full record of the proceedings which led to the signing of the NHI bill.

Reacting to the ruling, the BHF said, “It reaffirms the constitutional principle that all public power is subject to the rule of law. No office-bearer, including the President, is above judicial scrutiny”.

Ramaphosa has been given 10 days to respond. Currently, he is left with four days to furnish the court with the records.

Do you think private medical care providers are justified in their resistance NHI?
