Magesi FC pulled one of the biggest upsets in South African football by defeating Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 in the Carling Knockout Cup on Saturday evening.

Delano Abrahams scored the winner in the 87th minute to give Dikwena tsa Meetse their first ever PSL trophy. Despite Masandawana dominating the match, they failed to take their chances and were punished twice.

Sundowns dominated the first half but were denied several times by Magesi FC keeper Elvis Chipezeze. Masandawana eventually broke the deadlock in the 36th minute when Iqraam Rayners curled in a shot to beat the Magesi keeper.

Clinton Larsen’s men came back strong in the second half and were rewarded when Tshepo Kakora headed home a cross in the 48th minute. Downs pushed for the winner but failed to create clear-cut chances despite making changes.

A late charge from Magesi paid off as they forced Sundowns into conceding corner kicks. Edmore Chirambadare’s corner found Abrahams, who fired past Ronwen Williams.
