Cape Town cop killed outside his home after finishing 12-hour shift

An off-duty member of the South African Police Service (SAPS) stationed at the Cape Town Central station was shot and killed outside his Samora Machel home early on Thursday, 8 September.

SAPS spokesperson Colonel Andre Traut said the incident occurred in Oliver Tambo Drive at approximately 6:45 as the 39-year-old Sergeant arrived at home after a 12-hour night shift.
He was allegedly attacked by several armed suspects and was shot multiple times. He died at the scene.
“The victim was not armed with his service pistol at the time of the incident and it is still unclear whether he was killed for access to a firearm,” said Traut.
Cape Town detectives and crime scene experts are combing the area and gathering leads. The Western Cape police commissioner, Lieutenant-General Thembisile Patekile, offered his condolences to the bereaved family and said all resources would be used to track down the suspects.
