Cold and wet weather set to hit Gauteng this weekend
Gauteng residents are urged to brace for cold and wet conditions as a strong weather system moves across the province this weekend.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has warned that a series of cold fronts will bring a sharp change in weather conditions, with Gauteng expected to feel the impact from Saturday through to Monday, 20 April.
“These systems are expected to impact the Western Cape and Northern Cape before spreading eastwards across the central and eastern interior over the weekend,” the weather service said.
As cold fronts move inland, Gauteng residents can expect a noticeable drop in temperatures and unsettled weather.
By Saturday, the cold airmass will have reached the central interior, including Gauteng, marking the start of colder and wetter conditions across the province.

Daytime temperatures in Gauteng are expected to fall significantly as the cold air spreads across the province. While exact figures may vary, the overall trend will bring cooler-than-usual conditions, especially when combined with strong winds.
SAWS warned that “these conditions, combined with strong winds, will result in a pronounced wind chill effect,” meaning temperatures will feel colder than recorded.
Residents should prepare for chilly mornings and cool afternoons, with the wind intensifying discomfort, particularly in open and elevated areas.
Rainfall, travel risks and safety concerns
Rain is expected to accompany the cold front, with SAWS forecasting “isolated to scattered showers and thundershowers… including Gauteng.” These showers could become persistent at times, increasing the likelihood of localised flooding in low-lying areas.
By Sunday, the weather system will be fully established across much of the country, with SAWS noting that “cold, wet and windy conditions will have spread to the eastern and southern parts of the country.” Gauteng will remain affected during this period.
Motorists have been urged to exercise caution, as wet and slippery roads, along with reduced visibility, may disrupt travel. Outdoor plans could also be affected by the rain and gusty winds.
Residents are advised to dress warmly, use heating devices safely, and avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rainfall. Securing loose outdoor items and staying updated with official forecasts will also be important.
