Cyril Ramaphosa’s salary increase APPROVED

President Cyril Ramaphosa will receive a 3.8% salary increase after the adjustment was approved by the National Assembly of South Africa.

The inflation-linked increase raises the president’s annual remuneration from about R3.3 million to just under R3.5 million.

Follows a recommendation

The adjustment takes effect from 1 April 2026 and follows a recommendation by the Independent Commission for the Remuneration of Public Office-Bearers, which had initially proposed a 4.1% increase.

In a statement, the Presidency said the president accepted the commission’s advice but applied differentiated percentages across categories of public office-bearers.

The 3.8% increase applies to members of the national executive and provincial legislatures.

Sparked criticism

The decision predictably sparked criticism from opposition benches during a lively parliamentary sitting.

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) argued that the increase was difficult to justify amid ongoing economic pressures facing ordinary South Africans.

EFF MP Poppy Mailola said granting an increase on a multimillion-rand salary sent the wrong message at a time when many citizens are contending with stagnant wages and rising living costs.

Supporters of the adjustment maintained that the increase is routine and linked to inflation, forming part of an established annual remuneration process.

While the Presidency emphasised that due process was followed, critics have called on Cyril Ramaphosa to decline the additional pay as a matter of principle.
