Don’t panic: Woolworths won’t run out of Chuckles chocolate
Popular South African retailer Woolworths will continue to stock the beloved Chuckles chocolate brand, for at least the foreseeable future.
In what was no laughing matter, chocolate lovers were rather concerned this week when it was reported that the popular Chuckles brand might no longer be available at Woolworths.
The Financial Mail reported that chocolatier Beyers Chocolates – a supplier of the Chuckles brand – had entered liquidation proceedings following a dispute with Woolworths.
According to reports, the groups had clashed over Beyers Chocolates expanding its factory operations and potentially putting an exclusivity agreement with Woolworths in jeopardy.
No need to panic over Woolworths and Chuckles supply
Beyers, founded in 1987 by Belgian chocolatier Kees Beyers, was said to have entered liquidation after refusing Woolworths’ demand for exclusive supply from its new R200 million factory, which risked its 75 employees and other clients.
Thankfully, Woolworths quickly reassured everyone that Chuckles remain widely available with the same quality, likely from a new supplier.
Leading consumer journalist Wendy Knowler made it clear that Chuckles were not about to disappear from Woolies shelves, while sharing the following statement from the retailer.
“Woolworths cannot comment on the nature of our relations with Beyers due to confidentiality concerns.
“We can, however, share that Woolies chocolate – including Chuckles – is still the exceptional quality that our customers love and expect, and it is widely available across the country.
“There are no shortages or stock issues when it comes to Woolies chocolate.”
On the lighter side
Even Democratic Alliance geader Geordin Hill-Lewis weighed in, jokingly stating that any supply issue of Chuckles would be addressed at the highest level.
“This is a matter for the urgent attention of the GNU. South Africa has been through enough. But losing Chuckles? No. @CyrilRamaphosa must act.”
Funnily enough, in an April Fool’s joke last year, the retailer claimed that they would be introducing a new product, a chocolate-flavoured cryptocurrency called ChucklesCoin.
It read: “Woolworths Financial Services is proud to announce our entry into the world of cryptocurrency with ChucklesCoin.
“ChucklesCoin is the world’s first chocolate-backed cryptocurrency, and the latest step in our Good Business Journey. Together, we’ll build a future where sustainable farming, Chuckles chocolates, and blockchain technology (‘choc-chain technology’) join to make a difference.
“Stay tuned for more on the groundbreaking ChucklesCoin journey, as we shape the future of food and technology”.
