The Hawks in Gauteng are pouncing on the alleged “kingpins” of illegal mining (‘zama zamas’) on Tuesday, 4 October. The multidisciplinary raid started in the early hours and half a dozen suspects have been arrested thus far.

Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations (Hawks) spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale said the Department of Home Affairs and other stakeholders are participating in the operation.

The residences of the so-called kingpins of illegal mining in Carletonville and Khutsong were hit and six suspects have been arrested.

“The multi-disciplinary team is also seizing their luxury vehicles and investigations are still ongoing,” said the Hawks spokesperson.

The Directorate is expected to hold a media briefing and share more details about the operation at approximately 11:00 at the Lebanon Recreational Centre in Westonaria.

In an unrelated incident, the mass rape in Krugersdorp that shook the country was allegedly committed by illegal miners. Thirteen out of 14 suspects have been linked to the incident after being identified by the victims but the DNA evidence is still outstanding.
