India’s Test Batters Struggle in Ranji Trophy Return

On Thursday, India’s four Test hitters, including skipper Rohit Sharma, were dismissed for single-digit scores in the Ranji Trophy’s second phase.

The second round of India’s major domestic first-class cricket competition began on Thursday with fresh enthusiasm as numerous Test players returned to their regional teams following a poor Australia trip.

Mumbai’s opener was India’s longer formats captain Sharma, who had only scored 31 runs in five innings in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) against Australia. Right-handed hitter battled against opening bowler Umar Nazir, missing two loose deliveries before playing a half-hearted pull shot that ended his knock for three.

The other Test batter picked by Mumbai was left-handed opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, who was preferred over prolific teenager Ayush Mhatre. Jaiswal, India’s star batter on the tough Australia tour, scored four runs before Auqib Nabi trapped him lbw.

Rishabh Pant, who showed flashes of brilliance during the BGT, particularly in the Boxing Day and Sydney Tests, where he fought Australia’s merciless bowling unit with an unorthodox approach, had a dismal return to first-class cricket.

Delhi’s left-handed hitter walked out to bat at 84-3 in the 24th over against Saurashtra but was caught on the boundary after failing to sweep spinner Dharmendrasinh Jadeja.

Shubman Gill, who is captaining Punjab against Kolkata in the second phase of the Ranji Trophy, was the fourth Test batter to be bowled for a single-digit score after scoring four before being dismissed by Abhilash Shetty.
