IPID report on Phala Phala farm robbery has been declassified

The report by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) into the break-in and theft at President Cyril Ramaphosa’s Phala Phala farm has been declassified.

That confirmation was provided by acting Police Minister Firoz Cachalia in response to a written parliamentary question from the African Transformation Movement (ATM).

No longer justified

According to Cachalia, the report’s “Top Secret” classification was lifted on February 2 this year.

He said IPID reviewed the initial reasons for the classification and weighed them against public interest considerations before determining that maintaining the classification was no longer justified.

However, Cachalia emphasised that IPID’s probe did not focus on the primary criminal case involving the alleged break-in and theft at the Phala Phala farm.

Instead, the watchdog body investigated the conduct of members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) who handled the matter.

Not automatically released

He further noted that IPID investigation reports are not intended for public consumption and are therefore not automatically released, despite being declassified.

Access to the report would require proper legal processes.

The Phala Phala matter has drawn significant public and political scrutiny since details of the 2020 farm break-in emerged, prompting multiple investigations into both the alleged theft and the handling of the case by law enforcement authorities.
