KZN hippo attack: Mom ‘fighting for her life’ after horrifying ordeal
A stay at a resort in KZN has ended in horrific circumstances for one family, after a mother was 'trampled and bitten' by an enraged hippo.
A woman in her fifties is in a critical condition on Thursday, after she was bitten and trampled by a hippo at a resort in St. Lucia. It’s understood that the attack took place under the cover of darkness, when load shedding was implemented.

KZN hippo attack: What went wrong?
Netcare 911 were the first responders at the scene. They confirmed a number of crucial details. According to paramedics, the mother was accompanied by two others who managed to escape. The hippo charged at its victim while ‘trying to protect its baby’.

“A mother, her daughter, and the daughter’s boyfriend were swimming in the resort pool when they were hit with load shedding. The three exited the pool in complete darkness, walking back to their accommodation when they were confronted by an adult hippo and its baby.”

Animal attack #2: Giraffe tramples toddler
Sadly, this isn’t the only wild animal attack we’ve had to report today. Police also confirmed that a 16-month-old child was TRAMPLED to death by a giraffe in KZN. The baby’s mother was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition.
According to police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala, the mother and her baby were at the Kuleni Farm in Hluhluwe on Wednesday when the incident happened.
Gwala furthermore said the mother is reported to be in critical condition. The circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated. An inquest docket has been opened for investigation at Hluhluwe SAPS.
