LATEST | Robert Mugabe’s son to face additional charge

Police have confirmed that an additional charge will be added to the case against Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, the son of former Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe, and his co-accused.

The 28-year-old Mugabe and a 33-year-old man were arrested last week after a 23-year-old man was shot at Mugabe’s residence in Hyde Park, Johannesburg.

Charge of attempted murder

According to the SABC, the pair are expected to appear in the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

They are currently facing a charge of attempted murder, with police confirming that a further charge of defeating the ends of justice will be added.

Gauteng police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi said the firearm allegedly used in the shooting has not been recovered.

“Indeed, the firearm that was used in the commission of crime has not been found. As we already indicated last week, the two suspects, aged 28 and 33 years old, have been arrested for attempted murder and they will be appearing today in this same magistrate’s court,” she said.

Defeating the ends of justice

Nevhuhulwi added that the additional charge relates to the missing firearm.

“It will be for attempted murder and defeating the ends of justice since the firearm has not been found. We are expecting them to appear anytime soon, once the court proceedings start,” she said.
