A traditional leader has been shot dead and a family member wounded during a robbery at Makhuvha village outside Thohoyandou in Limpopo.

Fifty-nine-year-old Chief Ntikedzeni Makhuvha was fatally shot inside his home by armed suspects wearing balaclavas and security-type uniforms.

Fled the scene

According to the SABC, the robbers demanded vehicle keys and money before fleeing the scene with a vehicle, a laptop, a television set and two cellphones.

The injured family member was rushed to hospital for medical treatment.

Specialised Task Team Appointed

South African Police Service spokesperson Malesela Ledwaba confirmed that a task team has been established to investigate the incident.

Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Thembi Hadebe has appointed a specialised team to mobilise resources in pursuit of the suspects.

“The Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant-General Thembi Hadebe has set up a specialised team to mobilise necessary resources to ensure that these perpetrators are swiftly brought to book to face the full might of the law, calling upon our communities and all relevant stakeholders to assist the police with information that may lead to the arrest of these ruthless criminals,” Ledwaba said.

Police investigations are ongoing.
