Malloti faces possible extradition as Zim, SA authorities engage
Zimbabwean police say they are ready to extradite musician Malloti to South Africa over a 2017 armed robbery.
The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) says it is ready to hand over controversial musician Malloti to South African authorities, who are pursuing her over an alleged armed robbery committed in the neighbouring country.
SA authorities seek Malloti over 2017 robbery
Last month, South Africa’s National Prosecuting Authority engaged Interpol to trace Malloti in connection with a robbery that allegedly took place in the Western Cape in 2017.
ZRP spokesperson Paul Nyathi recently told journalists that the police are waiting for a formal extradition request from their South African counterparts before taking action.
“We are still waiting for South African authorities to submit a formal request. As members of Interpol and the Southern African Regional Police Chiefs Cooperation Organisation, we continue to cooperate on cross-border crime,” said Nyathi.
Zimbabwe ready to cooperate
He added that Zimbabwe has recently extradited suspects in line with legal procedures and will follow the same process in this case.
“In Malloti’s case, once all due processes are complete, the ZRP and the Government of Zimbabwe will not hesitate to hand her over, provided all formalities are met,” he said.
Malloti, whose real name is Millicent Chimonyo, is linked to an armed robbery investigation in the Western Cape.
Nyathi said the ZRP is also waiting for detailed information from the South African Police Service (SAPS) regarding the alleged offence.
“We need concrete evidence confirming that she committed a crime in South Africa. People must understand that they cannot commit crimes in Zimbabwe, South Africa, Zambia or Mozambique and then hide across borders. The law applies everywhere, and international legal frameworks are in place,” he said.
