McDonald’s goes ‘business in front, party in the back’ with McMullet burger

In a fast-food move that blends nostalgia, humour, and marketing flair, McDonald’s in New Zealand has launched a tongue-in-cheek creation dubbed the McMullet – a limited-edition cheeseburger inspired by the famously polarising hairstyle.

The gimmick burger features an extended strip of cheese designed to stick out from the back, mimicking a classic mullet haircut: short and neat at the front, long and wild at the back.

A haircut turned burger concept

Once associated with counter-culture and “social outliers”, the mullet has experienced an unexpected revival in New Zealand, becoming a mainstream style sported by athletes, celebrities, and trendsetters alike.

The McMullet is McDonald’s playful tribute to that resurgence – a culinary wink to a hairstyle that refuses to fade away.

Live launch at Auckland McDonald’s

The burger was unveiled at a live activation at the Penrose branch in Auckland, where fans of the haircut gathered to receive free McMullet burgers.

The store was temporarily transformed into a mullet-themed venue, complete with barbers on-site offering touch-ups to attendees – ensuring both their hair and their burgers were on brand.

The campaign was developed in collaboration with creative agency McCann, known for its bold and culturally driven marketing ideas.

A limited-time local twist

For now, the McMullet is exclusive to New Zealand, but the concept is simple enough for anyone to recreate at home – just add an extra slice of cheese that dramatically hangs out the back of your burger.

In a crowded fast-food landscape, the campaign has managed to cut through the noise, proving once again that sometimes all it takes to get attention is a good haircut… even if it’s on a cheeseburger.
