New Zealand won the third Test to sweep India 3-0 in the three-match red-ball series on Sunday. On day three of the third and final Test in Mumbai, the Black Caps defeated the Indians for 121 on a tough pitch to win by 25 runs.
In 2000, India was blanked at home in a two-match series against South Africa. Rohit Sharma’s team will be under pressure ahead of a tough five-match series against Australia later this month.
After the hosts fell to 29-5 on a shifting Wankhede Stadium pitch, Rishabh Pant was the only Indian batsman to persevere, scoring 64. Man-of-the-match Ajaz Patel got 6-57, his second five-wicket haul, while Glenn Phillips collected 3-42 to help derail the hosts for a famous triumph.
“It’s seriously special first of all to win a Test match here at this historic ground but also to win a series 3-0,” said 82-run first-innings scorer Daryl Mitchell
“You dream of it. To come here and win against a world-class Indian squad is incredible. Kiwis take on the globe “, he said.
The tourists won their first Test in India in 36 years in Bengaluru by eight wickets and claimed the series in Pune by 113 runs.
New Zealand’s first series win in India since 1955 ended India’s 18-match winning streak since a 2012 2-1 loss to England. Sharma stepped out of his crease to drive Matt Henry for a four in the first over of the third Test, but he perished for 11 following a risky shot against the same bowler.
Patel took two wickets in two overs when Shubman Gill, who had scored 90 in the first innings, dropped a ball that hit the stumps and left for one. Virat Kohli edged Patel back to slip on one quickly after entering at the crease, leaving India in peril at 18-3 on a tough Wankhede Stadium pitch.
After Glenn Phillips caught Yashasvi Jaiswal lbw for five and Sarfaraz Khan hit a full toss from Patel to Rachin Ravindra in the deep on one, the crowd fell silent again. At 71-6, Ravindra Jadeja and Pant held the ship together for 42 runs, but Will Young’s catch put India in danger.
Pant was dismissed by Patel after a New Zealand review after lunch, but he appeared to say he had not touched the ball. Once the runs stopped, India fell, with Washington Sundar dying last while trying to go large.
Indian skipper Sharma said: “Losing a series or Test match is hard. It’s hard to digest. We understand that we didn’t play well. NZ outperformed us throughout.”
We admit we made several mistakes […]. He continued, “I wasn’t my best as a captain and batter.
