R1 million worth of lobster confiscated in Eastern Cape patrol
Police arrested two people with West Coast Rock Lobster tails worth over R1.2 million while conducting routine patrols in the Eastern Cape.
Two suspects were caught red-handed with West Coast Rock Lobster tails valued at over R1.2 million on Sunday, 27 July, in the Eastern Cape.
They were arrested and charged with contravening the Marine Living Resources Act 18 of 1998.
According to officers from Port Alfred, the arrests were the result of their keen intuition and alertness.
ROUTINE PATROL LEADS TO MAJOR BUST
Members of the Port Alfred K9 Unit were conducting routine patrols along the R72 route when they noticed a suspicious light delivery vehicle travelling toward East London. The vehicle was stopped, and the two occupants were questioned.
Police report that the men were unable to produce the required documentation or permits to be in possession of the lobsters. The lobster tails, weighing 822.76 kilograms, was confiscated.
The suspects were arrested and are expected to appear in the Port Alfred Magistrate’s Court soon.
THREE ARRESTED FOR POSSESSION OF SUSPECTED STOLEN MEAT
In a separate incident in the Eastern Cape, three suspects were arrested for the possession of suspected stolen meat. The trio was found in possession of the meat at their residence.
Joe Gqabi District Commissioner, Major General Lindelwa Vellem, thanked the community for their cooperation in the arrests and for not tolerating criminal behaviour.
