Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema wins Ballon d’Or!

Real Madrid and France striker Karim Benzema has officially won his first ever Ballon d’Or award after an incredible 2021-22 season.

Benzema was at the forefront of Real Madrid winning four trophies – La Liga, UEFA Champions League, FIFA Club World Cup and Supercopa de Espana.

The 35-year-old contributed a whopping 50 goals and 16 assists in the 56 matches that he played for Real Madrid during that period.

Benzema went into the ceremony knowing that he had already bagged the prestigious award as he was clearly head and shoulders above the rest.

WHO DID KARIM BENZEMA BEAT TO THE BALLON D’OR AWARD?

Benzema beat stiff competition from Manchester City and Belgium star Kevin de Bryune and Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski.

The Real Madrid star was handed the Ballon d’Or trophy by legendary France midfielder and former coach Zinedine Zidane.

Zidane, himself, is a previous winner of the award after scooping it back in 1998 on the back of lifting the FIFA World Cup with France.

And Benzema becomes the first French player to win the Ballon d’Or since Zidane in 1998 while he’s only the fifth French football to win it.
