A 26-year-old Burundian national has died following a drowning incident at Langebaan Main Beach on New Year’s Day.
A 26-year-old man has died following a drowning incident at Langebaan Main Beach on New Year’s Day.
According to NSRI Mykonos station commander Nic Stevens, the NSRI Mykonos duty crew was activated at around 17:02 on Thursday, 1 January, following reports of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in progress at the beach.
Floating lifeless
NSRI Mykonos crew, NSRI lifeguards, West Coast Medical Rescue and the South African Police Service responded to the scene.
On arrival, it was established that the man, a Burundian national, had been found floating lifeless in the water by a kite-boarder, who recovered him to the shore.
A German doctor, who was also kite-boarding at the beach, immediately began CPR.
Declared deceased
Paramedics then continued with extensive resuscitation efforts, but despite all attempts, the man was declared deceased on the scene.
The body has been taken into the care of the SAPS and the Government Health Forensic Pathology Services. Police have opened an inquest docket.
The circumstances leading up to the incident are still under investigation.
Condolences have been conveyed to the family of the deceased.
