RIP | SA rugby stalwart Wessel Lightfoot dies aged 62

South African rugby is mourning the passing of uncapped Springbok Wessel Lightfoot, who died on Saturday morning following a battle with cancer.

He was 62.

Lightfoot endured a difficult period after his diagnosis, but is remembered for his significant contribution to the game at provincial and national levels.

Widely regarded as a player of Springbok calibre

He toured domestically with the Springboks in 1985 after the All Blacks’ tour of the country was cancelled, and represented the Junior Springboks, the SA Gazelles and the SA Barbarians during his career.

Although he never received a full senior Test cap, he was widely regarded as a player of Springbok calibre.

At provincial level, Lightfoot was a stalwart for Free State Cheetahs, earning more than 140 caps. He also represented the Griquas during his playing career.

Wessel Lightfoot played much of his rugby during the era of Springbok great Uli Schmidt, and competition for the national hooker position limited his opportunities at Test level.

Despite never officially earning Springbok colours, Lightfoot’s impact on the game and his dedication to rugby earned him widespread respect within South African rugby circles.

Tributes were quick to pour in for a player remembered not only for his toughness on the field, but also for his commitment to the sport.

He is survived by his family and loved ones.
