SA woman who fought in Korean War turns 103

From Korean War pilot to prize-winning gardener, a South African woman celebrated her 103rd birthday in Ireland last month.

Susan Williams, originally from South Africa, marked the milestone on 21 February at Genesis Healthcare Carnew Nursing Home in Wicklow.

According to the Irish Independent, staff organised a party complete with cake, flowers and warm birthday wishes from family abroad.

Williams, who moved to Ireland more than two decades ago, is currently the oldest resident at the nursing home.

Staff describe her as lively and sociable, with a sharp sense of humour and a love for conversation. Her 102nd birthday was celebrated in similar fashion last year…

Pilot who served during the Korean War

Before settling in Ireland, Williams spent many years in the South African Air Force. She served as a pilot during the Korean War in the 1950s and the border conflicts.

It was during her time in the Air Force that she met her husband, Dennis. The couple were married for decades before his death just over 10 years ago.

Family wishes from abroad

Williams’ son Roy and grandson, who share the same name, now live in Thailand. They were able to wish her a happy birthday during a FaceTime call arranged by nursing home staff.

Her birthday celebrations also included a special honour from Ireland’s president. On the eve of her birthday, Williams received a commemorative coin and certificate marking her 103rd birthday.

After moving to Ireland, Williams developed a passion for gardening and went on to win several prizes for it in Wicklow and across the country.
