Scattered coastal storms and dense fog expected in KwaZulu-Natal
KwaZulu-Natal will face scattered coastal thunderstorms, morning fog, and strong winds as weather conditions intensify.
KwaZulu-Natal motorists are advised to exercise caution on Sunday morning, as dense fog is expected to blanket the province’s interior.
Forecaster Phemelo Zonke warns that fog patches “may reduce visibility to less than a kilometre in places,” creating hazardous conditions for early commuters.
The fog will gradually lift, but SAWS advises drivers to maintain safe following distances and remain alert on wet roads.
Coastal storms intensify through the afternoon in KwaZulu-Natal
The province is set for another round of unsettled weather, particularly along the coastal belt.
Zonke says, “Scattered showers and thundershowers will develop along the coastal regions of KwaZulu-Natal, becoming more intense by late afternoon.”
Temperatures will remain cool to mild, with Pietermaritzburg reaching 22°C and Kokstad struggling to exceed 18°C. Inland regions, including areas bordering the Eastern Cape, will see partly cloudy skies with isolated showers extending into the evening.
Thunderstorms could bring heavy rainfall and hail
KwaZulu-Natal remains under the SAWS thunderstorm advisory affecting several provinces. Zonke notes that the province may see “heavy downpours, strong winds and pockets of small hail where storms become severe.”
Communities in low-lying areas are advised to closely monitor conditions, as rapid rainfall accumulation could impact drainage systems and informal settlements. Coastal winds may also strengthen, affecting boating and beach activities.
