Pakistan’s Test captain Shan Masood outlined a clear path to the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 final after a dominant first Test win against the West Indies on Sunday.
Masood voiced hope for Pakistan’s future in the game during a recent press conference, emphasizing consistency and smart planning in upcoming matches. The captain said Pakistan needs more Test matches to advance in the championship.
“We must play more Tests,” Masood added.
The first hitter also addressed Multan pitch critics.
He urged the team to focus on their overall ICC World Test Championship strategy rather than the surface.
“People need to stop focusing on the pitch,” argues.
“Our World Test Championship approach isn’t about pitch conditions. Our concept incorporates six championship series—three home and three away. “We can reach the final if we win at home and draw at least one away series,” he said.
The left-handed batter said that every pitch has its own problems and that it’s crucial not to worry when particular departments struggle on a surface when reflecting on his team’s approach to different conditions.
He noted that batters and spinners occasionally prefer certain pitches, which is part of the game.
Masood said, “We will continue to play with this mindset.”
Praise our performance. Not finding help on a pitch for the quick bowlers isn’t a big deal. Sometimes batters or spinners do better on various surfaces. We play by the conditions, and it should be supported. He noted that other nations do.
In the series opener, Pakistan’s spin attack dismissed the West Indies for 123 runs to chase a 251-run goal.
The visitors started cautiously but lost skipper Kraigg Brathwaite to Sajid Khan for 12 at 16/1. Two overs later, Sajid removed Keacy Carty for six, leaving the score 26/2.
Kavem Hodge, Sajid’s third victim, was removed for a duck as West Indies fell to 32/3. Mikyle Louis added 13 before Sajid picked up his fourth wicket. Greaves was removed for nine by Noman Ali, reducing the visitors to 63/5.
After Athanaze and Imlach scored 41 runs, Abrar Ahmed dismissed Imlach and Sinclair to worry the Caribbean side.
By dismissing Gudakesh Motie for a golden duck, Abrar took his third wicket, while Sajid took his fifth by dismissing Athanaze for 55. Abrar dismissed the visitors for 123 with his fourth wicket. Pakistan leads the series 1-0, with the second Test on January 25-29.
