Voters in two former East German states began casting ballots Sunday in elections expected to deal a blow to Chancellor Olaf Scholz's government and deliver big gains for the far-right AfD. An election victory for the AfD could make "coalition building at the local level to be incredibly difficult for the mainstream parties" and could result in "strange bedfellows" from the right and the left of German politics to keep the far-right party from power, FRANCE 24’s Aaron Tilton said, adding that the election outcomes are viewed as a "bellwether" of the 2025 federal elections.
