T20 World Cups: Proteas’ DISMAL record revealed
Doesn't make for good reading.
The Proteas have a hate-hate relationship with knockout matches at T20 and ODI World Cups. A hammering at the hands of New Zealand is the latest in a long line.
Proteas’ dismal record in ODI World Cup semi-finals
In the 50-over format, the Proteas have a 0–5 record in semi-finals. They have reached the final four on five occasions but never progressed to the showpiece.
In 1992, the Proteas were left needing 22 off the final ball against England after a rain-interrupted match. No South African needs to be reminded of the infamous mix-up between Lance Klusener and Allan Donald in 1999 in the semis against Australia. The Aussies then trounced South Africa in the 2007 semi, bowling the Proteas out for just 149. New Zealand’s Grant Elliott broke SA hearts in 2015 with a penultimate-ball six, and Australia edged the Proteas out in a Kolkata thriller in 2023 despite a heroic David Miller century.
T20 record isn’t much better
In T20Is, the record is better, but still points to serious issues around BMT. Their record stands at 1–3 in semi-final contests, and the latest defeat stings more than most after the Proteas looked like the side to beat throughout the tournament, only to fall at a familiar hurdle. The South African senior men’s cricket team have lost T20 World Cup semifinals in 2009, 2014 and now 2026. Their sole semifinal win came in 2024 against Afghanistan, but they went on to lose the final (their first ever) against India. The Chokers tag is unlikely to vanish any time soon.
