Hundreds were killed in the fighters' wresting of the north Darfuri capital from the army, with many of the abuses likely ethnically motivated. Sudan has been locked in a power struggle between rival generals since 2023. More than 40,000 people have been killed and more than 14 million displaced. Prior to El-Fasher's fall, it had been besieged for at least 18 months.
