Weather: Eastern Cape thunderstorms could pose ‘danger to life’
The South African Weather Service issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for thunderstorms in the Eastern Cape on Thursday.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a Yellow Level 2 warning for thunderstorms in the Eastern Cape on Thursday, 20 October. Similar warnings for KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng have been issued over the past week.
EASTERN CAPE WEATHER WARNING
The weather warning is valid from 13:00 until 23:59 on Friday, 21 October. A surface trough together with upper-air perturbations in the Eastern Cape is expected to bring a good chance of thunderstorms to the province, said the weather service.
“There is a possibility that the expected storms may become severe and result in heavy downpours, excessive lightning and large amounts of small hail.” The affected municipalities include Chris Hani, Amathole, Alfred Nzo and parts of Joe Gqabi, OR Tambo and Sarah Baartman.
The potential weather impacts include:
- Localised flooding of susceptible roads, low-lying areas and bridges.
- Potential damage to infrastructure, settlements and property.
- Potential damage to vehicles and loss of livestock.
- Potential disruption of municipal services and livelihoods.
- Minor vehicle accidents are a possibility.
- Danger to the lives of people and livestock.
