Zimbabwe opposition group cries ‘foul play’ in Sikhala arrest
NDWG says explosives found in Job Sikhala’s car aren’t his, calls arrest suspected foul play, both he and a co-passenger face charges.
The National Democratic Working Group (NDWG) in Zimbabwe has strongly denied that explosives allegedly found in opposition politician Job “Wiwa” Sikhala’s vehicle during his arrest in Pretoria belonged to him.
The party described the incident as suspected foul play.
South African police arrested Sikhala after reportedly stopping a Ford Fiesta on a tip-off that it was transporting explosives.
Officers allegedly discovered 26 blasting cartridges and 15 capped fuse connectors in the vehicle. Police are holding Sikhala at Pretoria Central Prison.
NDWG’s Position on the Sikhala arrest
The NDWG reaffirmed its support for Sikhala in a statement, insisting he does not own the explosives and calling his arrest politically motivated.
The party’s legal team is actively preparing his defence, pledging to use all legal avenues to protect their leader.
“As the National Democratic Working Group, we stand unwaveringly beside our leader and reaffirm our commitment to defending him through all legal means available.”
Other Person Charged
Police have also charged an elderly man who was travelling with Sikhala with illegal possession of explosives. Both are expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court.
