Zimbabwean found with 580 passports appears in Belfast court

A 43-year-old Zimbabwean national found in possession of more than 580 passports and over R147 000 in cash hidden in his bakkie, appeared in the Belfast Magistrate’s Court in Mpumalanga on Monday.

The suspect, identified as Edward Chitaizvi, was arrested in Waterval last week.

The passports belonged to Zimbabwean, Mozambican and Malawian nationals.

Intended as a bribe

Police believe Chitaizvi was en route to meet an individual who would have illegally stamped the passports.

The cash discovered in the vehicle is suspected to have been intended as a bribe for that person.

Chitaizvi is facing charges of fraud, money laundering and contravening the Immigration Act.
