A 51-year-old Botswana Defence Force (BDF) soldier has been arrested in connection with the alleged murder of his 49-year-old wife at their family home in Matobo.

As reported by Botswana‘s Daily News, Assistant Superintendent (ASP) Patrick Makoba of Tutume Police Station confirmed the incident in an interview.

He stated that police received a report involving a soldier from neighbours on Friday, 20 February.

Soldier asked the children to leave the room

According to ASP Makoba, neighbours quickly alerted authorities after learning that the soldier had allegedly killed his wife.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the suspected soldier arrived at the family residence at around 6am.

He reportedly asked the children to excuse them, saying he wanted to speak to their mother in private.

A short while later, the children saw their father leave the house.

When they went back inside, they found their mother lying motionless in a pool of blood with a deep cut to her neck.

Neighbours alert police

The Daily News reports that the eldest child, a Standard Five pupil, immediately notified neighbours.

The neighbours then contacted the police, who responded to the scene and launched an investigation.

Police later arrested the suspect in Francistown.

ASP Makoba said the man remains in custody while investigations continue.

Both the deceased and the suspected soldier are originally from Matobo.

Authorities have not yet disclosed further details as inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident proceed.
