The DA in Limpopo has raised alarm over the closure of the R531 road following the collapse of a key bridge near the Kruger National Park.
The Democratic Alliance in Limpopo has raised alarm over the closure of the R531 road following the collapse of a key bridge near the Kruger National Park.
According to the party, the bridge between Shimungwe Gate and the Wits Rural Facility was completely washed away on Sunday night, forcing authorities to shut down the route to the Orpen Gate until further notice.
Critical access route
The DA said it has engaged Ernest Rachoene, MEC for Public Works, Roads and Infrastructure, stressing the urgency of repairs.
The R531 is a critical access route connecting the Hoedspruit area to the Kruger National Park and plays a vital role in both tourism and local economic activity.
Its closure is expected to disrupt travel for visitors, as well as daily commuting for residents, including workers and schoolchildren.
Prioritise the rebuilding
The party warned that prolonged disruption could negatively impact key sectors such as tourism and agriculture, which are central to the region’s economy.
The DA has called on the provincial government to prioritise the rebuilding of the bridge, emphasising that the road is essential not only for tourists but also for surrounding rural communities.
Motorists have been urged to exercise caution and make use of alternative routes while the road remains closed.
