The Gauteng Roads and Transport Department has repaired more than 470 streetlights across the province in a drive to enhance road safety.
The Gauteng Roads and Transport Department has repaired more than 470 streetlights across the province in a drive to enhance road safety, improve infrastructure, and support crime prevention efforts.
Spokesperson Lesiba Mpya said the next phase of the programme will focus on the Fourways area, covering Cedar Road, Witkoppen Road, Malibongwe Drive, and Winnie Mandela Drive.
Feel safe
“The department has also signed a memorandum of understanding with the City of Tshwane to conduct repairs and assist with streetlights along provincial roads in the greater Tshwane region.
“This is to ensure that Gauteng motorists and residents feel safe when driving along the provincial network,” Mpya added.
The initiative forms part of a broader plan to maintain functional streetlighting across Gauteng, ensuring better visibility for drivers and pedestrians alike.
Meanwhile, Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi took to social media to post: “Thanks City of Tshwane for agreeing to be our implementation agency in fixing potholes, traffic lights and street lights along regional//provincial roads in Tshwane. Your offer was the cheapest compared to other metros and for that we are grateful.”
Repairs will continue
The department confirmed that repairs will continue in other areas as part of ongoing efforts to reduce accidents and enhance public safety.
By improving streetlighting infrastructure, authorities hope to deter crime and create a safer environment for all road users in the province.
