A 44-year-old German tourist was safely rescued on Good Friday evening after getting into difficulty while kayaking near the Knysna Heads.
According to NSRI Knysna station commander Jerome Simonis, the rescue operation was launched at 18:24 after eyewitnesses reported seeing a man on a sea kayak appearing to be in distress near the outer bar at the Knysna Heads.
The NSRI Knysna duty crew immediately responded from Station 12, launching the rescue craft Jaytee IV, while an additional response came from an NSRI crew member using a private vessel.
Struggling against outgoing tide
On arrival at the scene, rescuers found the tourist unable to paddle back through the Heads due to the strong outgoing Spring tide after setting out for an evening paddle.
Rescue crews brought the man safely aboard the rescue craft and recovered his sea kayak.
He was then transported back to shore without incident and did not require any further medical assistance.
Eyewitnesses praised
Simonis commended the eyewitnesses who raised the alarm, noting that their quick action helped ensure the situation was resolved safely.
The tourist expressed gratitude to the NSRI crew for the swift response that brought him safely back to land.
