Good news for those without electricity in Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality
The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality says electricity supply to affected areas is expected to be fully restored by Thursday this week.
The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality says electricity supply to affected areas is expected to be fully restored by Thursday this week, following the collapse of two electricity towers during last week’s gale-force winds.
The incident left large parts of the metro’s western suburbs without power, triggering knock-on water outages that have disrupted households, small businesses and schools.
Repair work
Metro Executive Mayor Babalwa Lobishe said significant progress has been made since repair work began, with teams working around the clock to meet the municipality’s restoration deadline.
“We are on Day 4 of the 10 days that we committed to fix the outage,” Lobishe said during a site visit.
“We are impressed with the work that has been done so far. All six monopoles are up, replacing the towers that fell.”
She said the next phase involves installing and testing the power lines before electricity can safely be restored.
“It is now a matter of installing the lines and testing the system. Once testing is complete, energy can be restored to the affected areas,” Lobishe added.
Apologised to residents
The municipality has apologised to residents and businesses for the inconvenience caused by the prolonged outage and has urged communities to remain patient while final repairs are completed.
Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Officials say updates will continue to be shared as restoration work progresses.
