India defeats South Africa in T20 with Samson and leg-spinners

On Friday, Sanju Samson scored his second Twenty20 international century to help India win the opening of four matches against South Africa at Kingsmead in Durban by 61 runs.

Opening batsman Samson scored 107 from 50 balls in an Indian total of 202-8, hitting 10 sixes and seven fours.

It proved sufficient. South Africa fell to 141 all out as leg-spinners Varun Chakravarthy and Ravi Bishnoi claimed three wickets each.

Samson promised to “keep my feet on the ground” after “10 long years of international cricket” without a regular spot in Indian white-ball squads.

He has only scored two international century in the past year: 108 against South Africa in a one-day international last December and 111 against Bangladesh in Hyderabad last month.

“I was in a zone, I just wanted to go with the flow,” he told SuperSport television after his knock, which concluded with Tristan Stubbs leaping to catch him trying to hit another six off leg-spinner Nqaba Peter on the deep midwicket boundary.

Indian openers Arshdeep Singh and Avesh Khan claimed early wickets in South Africa’s reply before Chakravarthy and Bishnoi bowled flawlessly in four-over periods.

They trapped South African talents Heinrich Klaasen (25) and David Miller (18) before Chakravarthy despatched them in three balls for powerful hits.

Suryakumar Yadav, captaining an India team without several of its top players, who were in Australia for a Test series or playing India A, hailed his side’s offensive style.

He wasn’t bothered by India’s only blemish—losing six wickets and scoring 35 runs in the last 5.2 overs after Tilak Varma (33) and Samson went quickly. We want to be fearless,” stated Yadav.

South African captain Aiden Markram said Samson had pressured an inexperienced bowling attack, but he was disappointed with his team’s batting.

“Great wicket. “We wanted a better start,” stated Markram.
