ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba says he is stepping back into Johannesburg politics with what he describes as “unfinished business”, after the party named him as its mayoral candidate ahead of the upcoming Local Government Elections.

Mashaba, who led the city between 2016 and 2019, argues that Johannesburg’s worsening problems require decisive leadership.

In an interview with eNCA’s Heidi Giokos, he outlined his priorities in his first media engagement since ActionSA confirmed his candidacy.

Mashaba has placed the inner-city at the heart of his campaign. He says the city must restore order, enforce by-laws, and act against undocumented migrants.

He insists that stronger law enforcement and accountability are critical to stabilising Johannesburg.

Mashaba also links undocumented migration to pressures on city management and public services themes that have featured prominently in his political messaging.

Mashaba’s return comes as Johannesburg continues to struggle with infrastructure decay, persistent service delivery failures, and an ongoing water crisis.

He attributes these challenges to governance breakdowns and says the metro needs tighter financial controls and more effective administration.

ActionSA eyes leadership of economic hub

ActionSA says Mashaba’s candidacy reflects the party’s intention to contest control of South Africa’s economic hub.

During his earlier tenure, Mashaba emphasised governance reform, law enforcement, and financial management.

The party believes his return will bolster its position in what is expected to be a closely fought contest for Johannesburg.
