Former Congress of the People (COPE) leader Mosioua Lekota will be honoured with a Special Official Funeral Category 2 next Saturday, 14 March.

Cyril Ramaphosa has also ordered that national flags be flown at half-mast at all flag stations from Saturday until the day of Lekota’s burial.

Lekota passed away earlier this week after a long illness.

Served in several key roles

During his political career, he served in several key roles in government, including as the inaugural chairperson of the National Council of Provinces, premier of the Free State, and minister of defence between 1997 and 2007.

The presidency said Ramaphosa had conveyed his condolences to Mosioua Lekota’s family and his political party.

The family has asked for privacy as they mourn.

According to the SABC, Lekota will be laid to rest in Bloemfontein next weekend.
