NSRI saves woman from Plettenberg Bay hotel pool

A 78-year-old woman is recovering in hospital after being pulled from a Plettenberg Bay hotel swimming pool without signs of life.

She was later revived following extensive resuscitation efforts on Sunday morning.

According to National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI), crews were activated at 11:18 after receiving an urgent call for medical assistance at a local hotel.

Fell into the pool

NSRI duty controller Geoffrey Williams said the woman appeared to have suffered a cardiac arrest before falling into the pool.

She was recovered from the water pulseless and not breathing.

Emergency responders, including NSRI medics, a doctor from Johannesburg, a paramedic from Hermanus, and bystanders, immediately initiated CPR on the scene.

An NSRI automated external defibrillator (AED) was also used during the resuscitation efforts.

After prolonged CPR, the woman’s pulse and breathing were successfully restored.

Transported to hospital

She was transported to hospital in a critical condition and later transferred to a medical facility in the Southern Cape for further treatment.

She is now reported to be in a serious but stable condition and showing signs of recovery.

The NSRI praised all responders involved for their swift action, noting that the coordinated efforts were crucial in saving the patient’s life.

The organisation also extended well wishes to the woman’s family, expressing hope for her full recovery.
