The Office of the Deputy President has welcomed findings by the Public Protector South Africa clearing Paul Mashatile and Transport Minister Barbara Creecy of any wrongdoing in the appointment of outgoing South African Airways (SAA) CEO, John Lamola.

The investigation found no evidence that Mashatile or Creecy improperly interfered in the recruitment process or violated the Executive Ethics Code.

Dismissed claims

In a statement, the Deputy President’s office said the ruling confirms longstanding assertions that media reports alleging irregular involvement were “misguided, misleading and mischievous”.

The reports had suggested that Paul Mashatile and Barbara Creecy conducted private interviews with candidates outside of the formal selection process – claims the Public Protector has now dismissed.

Proper procedures

The Presidency reiterated its support for transparent and merit-based recruitment processes within state-owned entities, adding that it remains committed to ensuring qualified candidates are appointed through proper procedures.

The findings bring clarity to a matter that had drawn public attention over governance and oversight in the appointment of leadership at one of the country’s key state-owned enterprises.
