Springbok stalwart continues to defy the odds

A Springbok World Cup winner, who was recently considering retirement 'signs', has instead come back stronger than ever.

Springbok stalwart continues to defy the odds

The role of Stormers and Springbok utility forward Deon Fourie at the 2023 World Cup will always hold a special place in the history books.

Besides becoming the oldest Springbok debutant at 35, he unexpectedly served as the back up hooker for the majority of the tournament, while playing 76 minutes in the final after Bongi Mbonambi picked up a serious injury.

Since then, Fourie has been beset by unfortunate injuries, and many feared that he potentially suffered a career-ending setback after sustaining an ACL tearm in April last year, followed by a torn bicep.

As the 39-year-old faced another lengthy period of recovery and rehab once again, he admitted that an uncertain path lay ahead.

“Emotionally, I have been up and down regarding my future,” he stated at the time. “Maybe I must start listening to the signs. We will see. When rehab starts at the Stormers and I start seeing the guys, maybe the fire will start burning again.”

As it turned out, that’s exactly what’s happened as Fourie fought his way back into the Stormers set up.

Springbok and Stormers stalwart looking as strong as ever

Fourie looked really impressive against the Bulls at Loftus Versfeld recently, and Stormers coach John Dobson has hailed his impact.

“I didn’t expect him to come back this good,” Dobson said ahead of the Stormers’ URC clash against Connacht on Saturday. “He’s in incredible form.

Impact off the bench

Dobson said the leadership and breakdown influence of Fourie was particularly impressive.

“What one can do in 20 or 30 minutes, the other matches. It is remarkable and it’s worked for us in three or four games.”

The Stormers are back in action this weekend as they return to the United Rugby Championship. Dobson’s team are currently the frontrunners in second place (51 points); they are effectively in a battle with Glasgow Warriors for the top spot and must beat Connacht this Saturday to maintain their “pole position” for a potential home semi-final.
