In a tragic turn of events, Naasief Abrahams, a player from Vineyards RFC, passed away on the field during their match in Mamre on Saturday afternoon.

Vineyards, a Paarl-based rugby club, travelled to Mamre for their WP Super League B encounter against Hamlets RFC on Saturday, but the 74.6 kilometre journey ended in tragedy for all parties involved.

According to eyewitness testimony on the scene, the 42-year-old appeared to go into epileptic shock after an on-field collision. A source close to Vineyards confirmed that Abrahams served as player-coach of the club’s third team.

As a result of the medical incident, the next two games scheduled for the day were called off and will be rescheduled for a later date.

Neither of the two teams could be reached for comment in the immediate aftermath of the incident.

Both teams have chalked up 15 logs points, but Vineyards (11th) pipped Hamlets (12th) on the Super League B standings due to a better points differential.
