Top South African private schools rank among world’s finest in 2026

Five South African private schools have secured a place among the world’s top institutions, earning spots on the 2026 Spear’s Magazine Schools Index – a global ranking often seen as a guide to the most prestigious education money can buy.

Compiled by an international panel of experts, the index measures more than just academic results.

Reputation, culture, networks and overall student experience all play a role in determining which schools make the cut.

A strong showing from KwaZulu-Natal private schools once again

Just as it did in 2025, KwaZulu-Natal dominates South Africa’s presence on the list, with four schools recognised:

  • Hilton College
  • Michaelhouse
  • St Anne’s Diocesan College
  • Cordwalles Preparatory School

They are joined by Western Province Preparatory School, the only Western Cape school to make the list.

Together, they place South Africa firmly on the global map of private education, alongside some of the most established institutions worldwide, including the United Kingdom’s Eton College and the United States’ Harvard-Westlake School.

Excellence comes at an eye-watering price

But this level of prestige comes with equally notable fees.

According to Spear’s Magazine, estimated annual boarding costs place these South African private schools among the most expensive in the country:

  • Hilton College: about R530 000 a year
  • Michaelhouse: about R485 000
  • St Anne’s Diocesan College: about R387 000
  • Cordwalles Preparatory School: about R320 000 – R325 000
  • Western Province Preparatory School: about R265 000 – R282 000

These figures reflect not just tuition, but access to facilities, networks and opportunities that extend far beyond the classroom.

The Spear’s Schools Index, launched in 2020, has quickly become a go-to reference for international families, wealth advisors and family offices.

Its influence lies in what it represents: not just academic success, but a certain kind of global positioning; the promise of connections, confidence and a pathway into elite circles.
