Gauteng police have confirmed that two more learners involved in the Vanderbijlpark scholar transport crash have died in hospital, bringing the total death toll to 14.

Twelve learners were killed at the scene of the collision on Monday, when a scholar transport minibus taxi crashed into a truck in the Vaal area.

Four other learners remain in hospital, one of whom has been discharged from ICU.

In court

The 22-year-old scholar transport driver appeared before the Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court on Thursday.

He now faces 14 counts of culpable homicide, as well as charges of reckless and negligent driving.

Provincial police spokesperson Mavela Masondo confirmed the updated charges, saying the additional fatalities occurred in the early hours of Thursday, 22 January, after the learners succumbed to their injuries in hospital.

The tragedy has intensified calls for stricter regulation and oversight of the scholar transport sector, as investigations into the cause of the crash continue.
