ICC World Test Championship has once again become the main talking point of cricket around the world, with the International Cricket Council to discuss significant changes in its structure at upcoming meetings. The ICC World Test Championship may be expanded to 12 teams in the next cycle, the biggest format change since the inception of the world cup since the last edition.
International cricket sources report that the ICC is also mulling giving one-off Tests points in the standings. The step might help to add more options to the format and value to the traditional standalone Test between countries.
The discussion is planned to be held in a series of high-level meetings later this month. The Chief Executives Committee meeting will be held virtually on 21st May. Next, ICC will hold a face-to-face meeting in Ahmedabad on May 30 and May 31. The meetings were originally scheduled for Doha early in the year, and were postponed.
The move to 12 teams would greatly alter the scenario of Test cricket, if it is approved. Smaller cricketing nations may be given more chances to play at the top of the game. It could also help to raise global interest in red-ball cricket, which has been less successful than shorter forms in sustaining its popularity.
One-off Tests being added to the points table is also being viewed as a measure to make the WTC more inclusive. There are some issues that may arise, however, about scheduling, fairness and balance to be considered between the teams that are stronger and those that are still developing.
