A 26-year-old Zimbabwean man remains missing after an apparent drowning incident at Bot River Lagoon near Fisherhaven on Saturday evening.

According to NSRI Hermanus, duty crews were activated at 20:13 following reports of a drowning.

NSRI rescue swimmers and a rescue vehicle were dispatched to the scene, while the South African Police Service also responded.

Gone missing

On arrival, it was established that the man had reportedly gone missing while wading in the lagoon earlier that evening.

He had been at the lagoon with a local friend, and the pair were understood to regularly fish together in the area.

NSRI rescue swimmers immediately initiated sweeping line wading search operations.

Police divers from the Water Policing and Diving Services were alerted by Hermanus Police to assist in the search.

Search extended

Search efforts continued on Sunday, with NSRI launching its rescue craft, JetRIB, to extend the operation across a wider area of the lagoon.

Despite extensive and coordinated efforts by all emergency services involved, no trace of the missing man has been found.

Police have opened an investigation, and Water Policing and Diving Services are expected to continue with ongoing search operations.

Authorities have expressed their thoughts and condolences to the family and friends of the missing man during this difficult time.
