The Democratic Alliance (DA) has welcomed the five-year jail sentencing of Julius Malema, describing it as a strong statement on accountability and the rule of law in South Africa.
In a statement, the new DA leader Geordin Hill-Lewis said the ruling sends a clear message that no individual is above the law, particularly in cases involving the illegal use of firearms in public spaces.

The sentencing was handed down by Magistrate Twanet Olivier on Thursday after Malema was convicted on multiple charges, including unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, discharging a firearm in a public place, and reckless endangerment.
The case stems from a viral video taken during the EFF’s fifth anniversary celebrations in Mdantsane in 2018, where Malema was seen firing what appeared to be a rifle in a stadium filled with supporters.
The State had been seeking a 15-year prison sentence.
Critical concern
The DA emphasised that gun violence remains a critical concern in the country, arguing that offences involving illegal firearms must be treated with the utmost seriousness.
According to the party, firm legal consequences are essential to restoring public confidence in the criminal justice system and reinforcing law and order.
The remarks come amid broader national concerns over rising violent crime, with political parties increasingly calling for stricter enforcement and accountability measures.
